Counting to 33 — SubhanAllah
0
0 of 33
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ
SubḥānAllāh
Glory be to Allah — He is far above every imperfection.

What the word means

Tasbīḥ is declaring Allah free of any fault, need or partner — not merely praising Him, but denying of Him everything unbefitting. It is the dhikr the whole creation is already engaged in: “There is not a thing that does not glorify Him with praise, but you do not understand their glorification.” (al-Isrāʾ 17:44)

Its weight

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever says SubḥānAllāhi wa biḥamdih a hundred times a day, his sins are wiped away even if they were like the foam of the sea.” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6405) And: “Two words light on the tongue, heavy on the scale, beloved to the Most Merciful — SubḥānAllāhi wa biḥamdih, SubḥānAllāhi l-ʿAẓīm.” (Bukhārī 6682, Muslim 2694)

How many, and when

The counter above is set to 33 — the count said after every fard prayer, followed by Alḥamdulillāh 33 times and Allāhu Akbar 34 times. The Prophet ﷺ said whoever does this after each prayer “will be forgiven his sins even if they are like the foam of the sea.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 597) Outside prayer, a hundred a day is the figure the narrations return to.
