Counting to 33 — Alhamdulillah
0
0 of 33
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ
Alḥamdulillāh
All praise belongs to Allah.

What the word means

Ḥamd is praise joined with love and gratitude — praising Allah both for what He gives and for what He is. It is why al-Fātiḥah opens with it, and why it is the first thing the people of Paradise are given to say: “Their call therein will be: Glory be to You, O Allah — and their greeting: Peace — and the last of their call: All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all the worlds.” (Yūnus 10:10)

Its weight

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Purity is half of faith. Alḥamdulillāh fills the scale, and SubḥānAllāh and Alḥamdulillāh fill what is between the heavens and the earth.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 223) He also said: “The best dhikr is Lā ilāha illa llāh, and the best supplication is Alḥamdulillāh.” (Tirmidhī 3383)

How many, and when

The counter above is set to 33, the count said after every fard prayer alongside SubḥānAllāh and Allāhu Akbar. (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 595) Beyond that it is the response to every blessing noticed — food, health, safety, a burden lifted. The Prophet ﷺ said Allah is pleased with a servant who eats a meal and praises Him for it, or drinks and praises Him for it. (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2734)
